Guiding Lives – In It Together!

Katie Tomkins and Evelyn Ragsdale both 18 have been Girlguiding together since joining 1st Garstang Rainbows in 2005. Moved up to 5th Garstang Brownies, 1st Garstang Guides and then became young leaders at 14. The two girls have been friends since being toddlers and feel Girlguiding gives them opportunities to do new and exciting adventures together that they may not have had otherwise. Katie commented “There’s been so many amazing experiences and memories that I’ll save forever, and I’ve met so many incredible people”. Evelyn stated “Thank you so much for all the laughs- there’s been SO many- and let’s keep going all the way to Trefoil Guild”

On 2nd December 2019, Katie and Evelyn achieved their adult leadership award following successful completion of the leadership programme. They were with 1st Garstang Guides supporting their end of year ice skating celebration. The unit leaders, Kerry Ann Walsh, Helen Kennedy and Jo Clapham expressed their pride at the two friend’s achievements, “They were part of the first group of guides when the Guide unit opened 10 years ago. They have flourished into amazing and dedicated young women and it has been a privilege to be a part of this journey with them”

Girlguiding has created a new section for 18-30 age range, however unlike the other sections of Girlguiding, the 18-30 offer does not have a uniform, leader or unit meetings. The idea of the 18-30 offer is for members to have flexibility to pick and choose what they are interested in and fit these around their everyday lives.

Helen Kennedy is the Lancashire North West County 18-30 Co-ordinator and is leading the charge on promoting this new section. You can learn more about the 18-30 offer in our county through Facebook: or Instagram:

As Katie put it…here is to the next leg of the journey!
