President’s Cup 2018

Posted on September 16, 2018

This year the presidents cup is a photograph competition. I would like to see a photograph of something you did last term in Rainbows that you really enjoyed. What was your favourite activity that you did? Hopefully someone took a photo of this and you can send it in to the competition. If not, maybe you could draw a picture of it.

There is only 1 entry per group, so you may have to vote on which one you choose.

The closing date for the photograph is 21st October so there is not long to think about it.

Please ask your leader to send to the Lancashire North West President – Tina Stott stottauntiet@aol.com

We can’t wait to see all your pictures.

ADVENTURE AND ADRENALIN FOR THOUSANDS OF GIRLS AT ENERGISE

Over 2,500 girls and young women from across Girlguiding North West England enjoyed a weekend of adventure and adrenalin as they took over Stanley Park in Blackpool for the ultimate sporting event; Energise.

Across the weekend of 12-13 May, Girlguiding members from 5 to 25 rose to the challenge to try out exciting new sporting activities, such as BMX-cycling, American football and climbing. The girls were excited to meet with newly appointed Chief Guide, Amanda Medler, the charity’s top volunteer, who joined in with the different activities.

The event, organised by Girlguiding North West England with support from Blackpool Council, aimed to encourage girls to get involved with sport and comes after research from Girlguiding’s Girls’ Attitudes Survey highlighted a number of barriers to girls’ participation in sport across the UK

One in two girls age 7-21 say gender stereotypes affect what sport and exercise they do

Two in five girls age 11-21 say fears of being judged on their appearance held them back from taking part in sport and exercise

One in four girls age 7-21 feel PE is more for boys than for girls

Julie Bell, Region Chief Commissioner, said: “The research shows a need to engage girls in sport and Girlguiding is all about giving girls the chance to try new things, have fun and experience exciting opportunities in a supportive environment with their friends. At Energise, girls discovered different sports, perhaps trying some for the very first time, while learning new skills and growing in confidence.”

Ellie Scales, age 17, said: “Sport and games are a great way of building confidence, improving teamwork skills and staying healthy. It’s so important for young women to engage with something that they care about, away from the pressures of school, and getting into sport is a great place to start.”

Councillor Maria Kirkland, Blackpool Council Cabinet Member for Leisure Services, said: “We were delighted to welcome so many girls and young women to Blackpool for a truly memorable experience for them. The goal of encouraging girls to get more involved with sports should be supported at all levels and we are pleased that our town was been chosen to stage this wonderful event.”

With over half a million members and volunteers, Girlguiding gives girls and young women the chance to experience adventure in a secure and supportive environment, allowing girls to become whoever they want to be. Huge events like Energise offer them a chance to make new friends and create memories as part of their Girlguiding journey.
