Memoirs Of County Weekend 2018

Posted on November 5, 2018

After arriving back home, unpacking my weekend bag and putting the kettle on, I sat down and reflected on the weekend that has just passed. I have only been to Waddow Hall three times, and only stayed overnight in the stables on one such occasion. This weekend provided the opportunity to explore the inside of the house (especially when trying to locate my bedroom through the rabbit warren layout) and the magnificent grounds surrounding us. And of course, to try all the delicious food on offer…I am buying maternity wear for next year’s weekend to ensure I can fit in a second helping of pudding!

The weekend was full of laughs, stories, ideas and learning…one example being the section training and trying out some activities from the new programme. I was in the Guide section and couldn’t stop laughing when we were trying to pass a story along the line using mime only…let’s just say that we won’t be snatched up by talent agents any time soon! Another group provided a demonstration of how to survive different disasters…I thought they were learning synchronised swimming when I took a peek during practice time though now I know what to do if I get lost in the lakes and an avalanche should hit!

The focus of this particular County Weekend was around the new programme and it has been apparent from listening to conversations and reading posts across social media that this is a particularly big change in Girlguiding and with change comes apprehension, questioning and some doubts but at the same time, if we let it, change can bring opportunity, growth and learning.

The weekend was a huge success and a massive thank you and round of applause is well deserved by the five lovely ladies who put a lot of effort and thought into making the weekend enjoyable for all! Thank you Rachael, Maureen, Helen, Jo & Lisa.

A huge thank you to our three lovely trainers who joined us from Scotland. Their enthusiasm, sense of humour and knowledge made the weekend feel effortless to learn and grow as guiders.

It was also the first County event under our new County Commissioner, Audrey Suart who closed the weekend by thanking everyone for giving up their time to attend and invest in Girlguiding once more and asked everyone to give the new programme a decent chance…who knows, in 12 months we may be wondering what all the fuss was about anyway!?

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” -Socrates
